Raoul,

Your story brought tears to my eyes. Four-and-a-half years ago we lost my grandmother to lung cancer. We new for a while something was wrong, as she seemed to lose her vitality. From diagnosis to death it was a brief six months.

The thing that most struck me about it was how lost my grandfather looked without her. They were married over 60 years. When visiting my grandfather, he told me, "I miss her so much," and he began to cry as I held him. To that point, I had never even see his eyes water. He was a rock, but her death crushed him.

Even now, he has good days and bad...every time I see him, I wonder if it will be the last time (I live two states away). If your grandfather was anything like mine, and it sounds like he was, I can only imagine your pain.

Nothing I can say will lessen the impact on you. I hope my story has brought some small distraction. My thoughts are with you, my friend.

Raoul, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time of loss. Your grandfather seemed a wonderful man who lived his life full of faith and love. He may be gone from this earthly plain, but he still lives on everything YOU are, and in the memories of all who loved him.

It so saddens me, though, that those entrusted with easing pain and suffering, could have done so much more harm than good. Whatever happened to the "Hippocratic Oath"? Doesn't it mean anything anymore?

Peace to you and yours! :)

Raoul, I am so very sorry for your loss. And I'm doubly sorry that your grandfather had to to through so much. I get the impression he was a very remarkable man.

We've seen a lot of the system, and there are definitely high and low points. Our system is under a lot of strain and I hope the next administration pays more than lip service to the notion of fixing things. I don't hold out much hope.
