Sorry about the recent outages

Please accept my apologies for the several recent outages on this and my other sites. During the past week, my sites have had 5 extended outages, each lasting anywhere from 1 to 10 hours, and all due to the unbelievable incompetence of 1and1’s web admins. Somehow they’ve managed to screw things up so badly that my web server (and all the sites I hosted on it, including this one) went down repeatedly and stayed down for hours each time.

Did I get apologies from them? Not really. After writing to their complaints department several times, I finally got a response where I was offered a month of free hosting for my troubles. I replied to let them know that another month of hosting at the current level of (un)reliability is a gift I DO NOT WANT.

I’m not going to bore you with all the ugly details, but let’s just say the past week has involved a lot of my head banging against the wall when faced with the sheer idiocy of their responses to the outages.

As a result, I have moved this site to a new host: Media Temple. If you’re reading this post right now, that means you’re seeing my site at its new location. I am very eager to see if they perform better than 1and1, given the good things I’ve heard about them. If they are better, I will move my other sites to them as well.

Something to keep in mind about 1and1 is that it seems their tactic is to tolerate you as a user until you actually start to use the resources they promise in their so-called guarantees. When your web space usage goes up, and your bandwidth inches above a certain level (even if that level is not even 10% of what they promise), they will let your sites go down, and keep them down until you move away. That’s one way of ensuring that they can cram a ridiculous number of sites on a server, knowing full well they can’t support them if they start using up more resources.

I also encourage you to check out this thread on FriendFeed, particularly Mark Anderson’s comment. It re-inforces the old adage: you get what you pay for. If you expect to get good web hosting for $10/month or less, you’re kidding yourself. Your sites may work fine for a while, but will, without a doubt, crash at some point once they begin using up more resources, and your web host will be unresponsive, just like 1and1. You’re better off paying a little more and getting better servers and service.

My 1and1.com server has been down for over 60 hours and still going. No real explanation from them about what is going on. They offered me a month of free hosting also ($9.95 credit or something like that). Unbelievable!

BTW, you shouldn’t hyperlink to 1and1.com because it benefits their search engine rankings. If you link to them, put a rel=nofollow attribute on the link.

Thanks for reminding me, Josh. I put the nofollow attribute in the HTML.

You may have also noticed that you won’t find the uptime guarantees on their site anymore. They took them off, perhaps in anticipation or response to the recent slew of outages.
