Flying is more irksome than ever, and it’s our own fault
I’ve been harping aplenty in past posts about how nasty and inconvenient flying has become, what with all of these time-wasting “security” checks at airports, but with the recent “bomb scare” in the UK, I think it’s become downright unpleasant. What, now we can’t bring any liquids on the plane with us, not even a bottle of water? It’s absolutely ridiculous!
And it’s all because of a supposed terror plot, one that never took place, and is based purely on the word of the UK police. Sure, thanks a lot! The least they could have done was to provide a proof of concept of these supposed liquid explosives. I for one would like to see how it’s possible to carry these explosives inconspicuously in water bottles or Gatorade bottles, and then do something with them. They should have staged a mini-demonstration. Unless most people have gotten brainwashed, they’re not going to believe someone’s word. I for one find it very hard to trust them. If the impact of the new security measures had been minimal - say, we weren’t allowed to carry nail polish or lipstick on planes, which only affects women, and then only certain ones - fine, I’d have been willing to believe them, but water?! It’s unacceptable!
I tell you, it’s only going to get worse and worse. What’s next? We won’t be able to wear clothes? They’re already making us take our shoes, belts and watches off, not to mention any metal objects (keys, jewelry, etc.) Meanwhile, TSA employees are having a ball stealing our stuff - just do an internet search for theft in airports if you don’t believe me.
And what’s next after that? No clothes at all, only government-approved jumpsuits? We’ll all have to change into them at security points? Hey, why don’t we let them probe our orifices, too? Yes, for the sake of security, let’s let them drop some probes down our throats, and then bend over like good little citizens… Let’s let them put us through bomb-sniffing machines, x-ray us, even take blood samples (after all, blood is liquid and liquid explosives can be theoretically hidden there)…
It all sounds very laughable, and quite ridiculous, doesn’t it? But I’m exagerating for a reason, you see. Because what’s at the root of all this? It’s the stupid desire of most people to be babied, and with Americans, it’s increasingly so. In a country that made a name for itself because of the independent spirit and moxy of its people, I find it disgusting that most now want the government to shelter them from anything, including the risk of a bomb on a plane, by going to ridiculous lenghts to do it.
Let’s face it, we’re driving this train. We’re the ones complaining to no end about how our government has failed us because 9/11 happened, and how much more could have been done to strengthen our security, blah, blah, blah… So, without a second thought, we entrust our security in the hands of government bureaucrats, then complain when they come out with solutions like the security checks, and the insecure, inaccurate and unfortunately not inexpensive TSA security database, and other such pearls of wastefulness… Can we really expect any better from them? I say we can’t, and we shouldn’t be surprised if they come out with even dumber security solutions in the near future.
So what can we do to make it easier for ourselves? Well, we can get some backbone, and accept a higher risk when flying. We can insist on less security checks and less bureaucracy, and face the reality of a potential attack. Sounds crazy? No, not if when something happened on a plane, we’d stop screaming and waiting for someone to do something, and actually did it ourselves. Yeah, that’s right, we’d need to get some courage to act and defend our safety. It’s a tall order, I know, and most people are cowards, but it is a possibility. You know, back when America gained its independence, that didn’t happen because people sat back in fear. That happened because people had the courage to fight for what they believed in. Have we gotten too pampered to do that nowadays? Are we too soft to punch a terrorist in the face when he threatens us? I’ll let you ponder that question for yourselves.
