A sinister web entraps victims of cyberstalkers
Found this article in the New York Times. I had no idea things could get so ugly. What is wrong with these people? Have they no decency?
From the article:
“In about half the cases, victim and perpetrator appear to be strangers. For the rest, it can be deeply, disturbingly personal.
Earlier this month, a Suffolk County police officer, Michael Valentine, was indicted on 197 counts of stalking, unauthorized use of a computer and other charges after hacking into the Yahoo e-mail account of a woman he had briefly dated and posing as her in online communications.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office also charges that Mr. Valentine, of Lake Grove, accessed the woman’s personal profile on the dating site Match.com, sending electronic “winks” and other communications to 70 different men on the site. At least two showed up at the woman’s home for dates.”
This is just a side example in the article - but it’s disturbing because a police officer did it. The article mainly details the story of a woman in NY who’s been cyberstalked. Her information was posted on adult website profiles with specific requests for sex at her address. Strange men began showing up in the middle of the night or calling her. The whole thing is so disturbing.
Read the article to see how she’s fighting through it, but she isn’t getting much help. She’s pretty much on her own, and she still doesn’t know who’s behind the whole thing. Here is the link.
