Just read about Terri Hatcher’s interview on CNN
I read an article about that, and I have to come back to the abortion issue. Here’s why: folks against abortion will spend hours in front of abortion clinics to stop someone from tampering with a clump of cells, but they won’t do a thing to stop child abusers, which to me, is a crime that deserves much more attention. The “uncle” who abused Terri Hatcher and the teen who later committed suicide got something like 14 years in jail. Really, that’s nothing compared to the damage he inflicted. He’ll go there and probably learn new ways to commit crimes from the other inmates.
Then there are cases when these criminals walk away free! How much justice is in that? When a child is abused, we’re talking about life-long problems. The abused children will suffer for life as adults - they’ll have nightmares, they’ll have intimacy issues, they’ll be scarred for good. That’s real pain!
We can debate this issue till we’re blue in the face, but this sort of pain is NOT felt by a clump of cells with no mind of its own, entirely dependent on the uterus, when and if it is removed, for whatever reason - and those reasons are best left to the mother, NOT to someone else. It seems to me like we’ve got our priorities all messed up.
We’re focusing on the wrong things. The decision to have an abortion or not, in most cases, can be addressed through counseling. We can make the counseling process more thorough. But pedophiles and the crimes they commit are a much more serious issue, that should be one of the priorities of legislative and judicial bodies - and it’s not.
