South Dakota bans most abortions
I’d been expecting this very wrong thing to happen ever since I read a previous article where the South Dakota state legislature was preparing to approve the bill. It never fails to amaze me how some people can reserve the right to meddle in other people’s lives and bodies on the basis of religious prejudice. I consider myself a conservative in many things, particularly when it comes to religion, but there’s one thing I get, loud and clear: pro-choice is the way to go when it comes to this issue. The choice ought to rest with the woman who is actually bearing the child. The risks and implications ought to be explained to her, yes, but she should be the one to decide what she wants to do, not some politician or preacher.
What strikes me as particularly inane is that this law “bans abortion even in cases where a woman is pregnant as a result of rape or incest, or if giving birth would damage the health of the mother.” Wow, how thoughtless! To think that they would force a woman left pregnant by her father or brother (who might just happen to oppose abortion as well) to have that baby is beyond me. What about a woman who is brutally raped, or worse, gang-raped? She should have the child, to remind her of the horrific experience? What is wrong with people today? How is it that they’re so arrogant in their religion and/or beliefs that they can’t see past their own prejudices? It makes me so angry that these people pushing the anti-abortion agenda, who probably have “God bless America” stickers on their big-honking SUVs and trucks, think they can dictate what happens to someone’s body! How dare they? Are we regressing back into the Dark Ages, when it was illegal to think differently than the Catholic church when it came to religion and other hot-button issues? What’s next, the inquisition, for those of us who want freedom of choice?
Why can’t reason prevail? Just look at the Bible. God is reason and logic and everything that’s good. Why can’t we, as Christians, emulate that in our behavior, especially when it comes to issues like this?
